.:.:Happy Birthday to Me:.:.

Since it's my birthday I figured I could get away with a slightly self-indugent post. (hah, like they're not all that already, right?)
So to start with, here's one of my all-time favorite pictures.
This is Max sometime in the summer of 2006. He was really mad at me, I can't remember why, and he made this ridiculous face. I laughed so hard. He just held the face. He held it long enough for me to run and get the camera.
6-29-06.jpg
And to take two pictures.
6-29-2006-2.jpg
Hah! It still cracks me up. You can see he needed a haircut in this picture too. Seems to be a constant problem at our house....
And for a quick trip back in time, here's a picture of my birthday back in 1985. I was turning 5. Fabulous cake, isn't it?
cake85.jpg
Please note a very young, very cute Megan peeking into the picture from the right.
The tradition for my birthday was to have a pinata. It was often homemade. Our best friends the Williams would come over in the evening and we'd beat that thing long and hard until it broke. Sometimes the homemade ones would never break and dad would have to take the thing out somewhere and smash it for us.
pinata85.jpg
Here's the one from when I was 5. I love the rainbowness of it. I also love that I'm wearing some sort of long pearl necklace. Awesome.
Pinatawilliams88.jpg
Here we are in 1988, when I was turning 8. Joel and Megan Williams on the left, and Charlotte's best friend Brittany on the right. I love the high noon effect of the big photographic light we had.
pinata92.jpg
And this is 1992. What do you think we were all saying in this picture? Something loud I'm guessing. We didn't even bother to decorate this pinata, it's just the organic newspaper. Completely functional. I bet it was hard to break too. Joel did a pretty good job breaking them as we got older though, so he always had to go last so he didn't just break it first and bum everybody out.
Oh yeah, please note Murphy's hair in this picture. Does it look familiar?
There's much much more, but that's all we're going to see for now. You'll have to wait for my next birthday for more!!
But I'll leave you with this picture.
ginnaclarinet92.jpg
Remember the clarinet we saw on the sideboard in the tea party picture? Well here it is in action. Why am I kneeling on the floor to play? Who knows, but I played whenever and wherever I could. Doesn't Charlotte look adorable in this picture? What a cute smile.
Happy January! Aren't we glad that it's February now? And that's all the questions for tonight. Later! We're off to watch Lost. It's a good birthday present.

::The Cut::

So now he can see, but he does still have plenty of hair. And he still has his wings which I love so much.
Kris took him to the haircut while I was in class, so afterwards because he was so good Kris took him to Walmart to pick out a "prize" He came home with this ridiculously huge baseball bat.
20080124-IMG_3232.JPG
It's one of those really light ones. You know, I think all of us had one at our house when we were little. I'm not too thrilled about him running around in the house with that thing, but so far he's been fine. For some reason he's very interested in baseball right now which is really weird because neither Kris nor I care about it at all.
20080124-IMG_3233.JPG
I like his haircut. It took me a little bit to get used to it, but now I recognize him (the first couple of days I couldn't pick him out of the crowd when I was picking him up from school). He's not that happy though. He was very upset about it the next morning. Shortly after he woke up he asked me if his hair had grown. Then he reached up and tried to brush his hair down into his eyes. When he couldn't he broke down: "My hair didn't grow!!! Boo Hoo!!"
So we had to comfort him somehow. When we discovered that his hair now looks just like Kelly's (Kris's brother) that really helped. He hasn't complained much since then.
20080127-IMG_3253.jpg
It's just so funny that he's so particular about his hair. I mean, he's not even a little girl! He's just so emotionally attached to it. I do remember crying after haircuts when I was little because I thought I looked ugly though. And Kris is pretty emotionally attached to his long hair. Max must just be a silly combination of the two of us I guess. Makes sense, right?
20080127-IMG_3265.JPG
He's still not as hairy as Sultan though, no matter how hard he tries. Sultan wins every time.
20080127-IMG_3294.jpg
I just keep telling him that it will grow back. What I don't tell him is that when it grows back we'll just cut it again. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

.:.:Big News, really really Big News:.:.

We heard from the "matching" service that Kris had to use to apply to his residency programs yesterday. We knew that the decisions would all be made public on the 28th, so we were pretty nervous the day before. But somehow we made it through the night and in the morning we got an email at 7:30 saying we are going to.......(a drumroll would probably be appropriate here)........Providence, Rhode Island for the next two years!! (Starting in June as far as we know)

We're not too surprised about it actually, because Kris's interview at that program went SO well, and they were very positive about him. They have a couple of locations, so we figured he would get into one of them. We thought it would be either Brooklyn, NY or Providence. We're happy about Providence because it's supposed to be the location with the best and newest facility and equipment.
We're especially excited considering that there was always a chance that things wouldn't have worked out. If that had happened Kris would've either had to give up the dream of being a pediatric specialist (which really would've bummed him out) or else wait a year and reapply. Neither of those alternatives sounded that good to me, so I'm just so glad that it all worked out.

Interestingly, neither Kris nor I have ever been to Rhode Island! The interview for this program happened in Brooklyn. So we don't have any idea what to expect. Luckily we have some great friends in the ward that just recently moved here from Providence (crazy, isn't it?) They're going to help us figure out some good areas we could live in and stuff like that. We're going to miss them and all of our other fun friends when we actually move. It's so sad to think of leaving, even though we'll be so so glad to be done with school and for Kris to move on to the next step in his "professional life." Probably the best part for me is that he is actually going to get paid. I'm typing it, but I can hardly believe it! He's going to get paid and we will have benefits, which is going to totally blow my mind. Hopefully I'm going to get to quit my job. I'm really looking forward to it.

So although we don't really have any idea how it's all going to be, we do have a few plans...
I'm looking forward to doing a lot of shopping here:
You luckies in UT have one, but poor me, I've have been suffering without. We should have one out here, I don't know why we don't! I'm excited because there's an Ikea between Providence and Boston. Yay!

Also I'm planning on frequenting this wonderful place:
I love H&M!! And for those of you that haven't had a chance to go, it's worth traveling for. Good clothes, cool clothes at excellent prices. There's one of these outside of Boston too.

We're also planning on spending a lot of time here:
and here:
and here:
assuming of course, that these pictures are all of Rhode Island beaches. They're supposed to be....
I love the beach, so I'm thrilled at the idea of living within a relatively short drive of some beautiful beaches.

We're also looking forward to frequenting here:
(New York of course!)

and here:
(Boston) We like big cool cities like these.

Kris is hoping for some good road biking opportunities, which seems likely to me, considering that road biking is kind of a preppy sport, and New England is preppy, right?

And I guess we're supposed to cheer for the Patriots now in football, and it seems this would be a good opportunity to do that, since they are probably going to win the super bowl. But I just can't. I think they're too boring. They just win to much. I guess that's a good problem to have. We'll see if living out there changes my mind.

So thanks to all of you for all your help and support!! Thanks for voting on Kris's application pictures, you obviously picked a good one since it got him some great interviews! Hopefully we'll have a chance to come visit all of our peeps out in UT this summer, maybe in may or june sometime. Everybody better clear their schedules. We'll see you then!

::A Gem::

I've been meaning to post this for a while. It's an absolute gem that I found a couple of years ago when I developed a couple of rolls of film that were shot on my old point and shoot. In my family we got a camera for our birthdays when we turned 8. It was way cool.
So here's a fabulous tea party.
Tea party.jpg
I'm not sure what the event was here, but it does look fancy. I'm not going to name any names here, in order to protect the innocent, in case they want protection for some reason, but you know who you are! I will say though that I'm on the far left, in case anybody can't tell. And Charlotte (my favorite sister) is the one closest to the camera in the foreground.
Anybody in the picture remember what we were doing? Char? We're certainly all dressed up very fancily--hairbows, dresses, etc. We've got candles lit, we have the quilted placemats out, as well as napkin rings (wow!) and it looks like we're drinking coolaid.
Anyway, looks like fun. I'd do it again tomorrow with all the same old friends if I could!
Can you see my clarinet in the background standing on the hutch (or sideboard or whatever you like to call that piece of furniture). This must've been in 1992 or so, which is when I was teaching myself to play the clarinet. It stood around the house all the time because I liked to pick it up and play it whenever I was in the mood. You know, a swingin' version of twinkle twinkle little star brightens up the day. I should probably try that nowadays.

.:.:Tasks:.:.

The haircut pictures aren't uploaded yet so....going along with yesterday's theme of Max going stir-crazy here's another post. You can probably tell that I've been thinking a lot lately about how to keep Max occupied, productively. I think that we don't give him enough stuff to do, like tasks that he feels are important and so he gets bored sometimes and acts out. Maybe. That's just one theory.
I know Max looks angelic in all these pictures, and so maybe it's hard for some of you to believe that he can be a bum, but believe me--he can be REALLY bummy if he wants to.
So anyway, I've been racking my brains trying to come up with tasks he can do that challenge him a little bit and that might be slightly helpful for the household. That's tough. So far I've come up with one task. Putting away the silverware from the dishwasher.
20080111-IMG_3113.jpg
In my household growing up this was always a task that was given to the youngest person in the family, as long as they were big enough to actually do it. In fact, I remember doing it when I was really small. I enjoyed the sorting aspect of it.
20080111-IMG_3114.jpg
I'm not sure how Max feels about it. I think he likes feeling important and useful,
but he doesn't bother to concentrate long enough to make sure that each piece ends up in the right spot. I think he's just a little lazy. But we have a good time. I just have to remind him what he's doing every two seconds. I think (and hope) it'll get better with time.
20080111-IMG_3115.jpg
So it seems to me that it's about time to be trying to teach him a little responsibility. I probably should've been doing this long ago. We're going to try to work up a small chore chart with stickers, something that he can see his progress on, so he can feel like he's accomplishing something.
Any suggestions from you people out there? What are some other tasks or activities I could use? What can a almost 4 yr old really do that's even slightly useful to the household, or is all the benefit just to him? Help me out here!

20080111-IMG_3116.jpg

::Props to Kari::

We're going a little stir-crazy here in our house because of all the cold weather. And when Max gets stir crazy he tries to think of everything he can possibly do that's against the rules, or that would make me mad.
It's not a good thing.
So I've been trying to come up with good activities and interesting things for us to do, inside, in the afternoons. Because of course, who wants to play with billions of cool toys? What's the point of even buying toys? Sometimes I wonder.
So anyway, Kari (Kris's sister) made us this great family concentration game last Christmas, and I almost forgot that we had it because a lot of stuff got put away in our move last spring and has never been pulled out. But I found it the other day and Max was really excited to play it.
20080110-IMG_3111.JPG
Kari's got pictures of every member of our immediate family (including Sultan) on these cards, and on the back it says "Max's family matching game." He was especially excited that the cards had his name on them, since he recognizes his written name nowadays.
20080110-IMG_3103.JPG
I just love the whole concept of this game. Since we live so far away from most of the family it's really good to review everybody's names. That's not a problem for him right now, he pretty much remembers everybody just fine, but last Christmas he didn't, so it was great to get to talk about everybody.
20080110-IMG_3110.JPG
So thanks to Kari for having the great idea to make this game, and for taking the time to make sure everybody on both sides of the family is on it.
We'll be spending some frigid hours playing it waiting for spring to come. Anybody want to come and play it with us?

.:.:In Dire Need:.:.

This is my cute little friend Max.
20080114-IMG_3167.JPG
He's pretty cute, isn't he?
20080114-IMG_3156.JPG
Does he look like he's in dire need of anything in particular to you?
20080114-IMG_3158.JPG
He insists that he doesn't need a haircut, and tells me that he really really likes having hair in his eyes. In fact, when I brush it off his face he quickly brushes it back into his eyes.
For some reason his long hair makes him feel cool. Wow, whose kid is he? Could he be related to Kris Hendricks who is always trying to grow his hair out?
20080119-IMG_3199.JPG
I'm just afraid he's going to trip on something, or run into the wall. Hah, not like he doesn't do all that already!
20080119-IMG_3198.JPG
We do have a haircut scheduled for him tonight. We'll see how it goes. He's only recently allowed us to convince him that no, haircuts don't actually hurt.
We would've had him in a lot sooner, but the girl who cuts our hair was supposed to come into the dental school so Kris could do some work on her. She stood him up twice and after that we had a hard time wanting to go and pay her to cut our hair. And I don't like to take Max to places like Great Clips because they cut off his cute side curls.
So we just decided to be brave and go back to the girl. I'm sure it'll be fine. Max, however, isn't so sure he's going to be fine without his long hair.

::My Song::

While playing the harmonica one day, Max announced that he had written me a "Christmas Song". I was delighted of course, and later had him play it for the video camera.
Here it is for everybody to enjoy. The only bummer is that Max got ahold of my little video tape and almost ruined it. He did some really weird stuff to it, which resulted in the actual tape getting ripped. Kris put it back together, so luckily all the content was recovered, but I think the Christmas song cuts off early due to the rip.
However, please feel free to enjoy what's there!

It's a good dad that lets an almost four year old "use" his drill. Well I guess he's only a good dad if he doesn't let the almost four year old drill off his face, which Kris didn't.

= Monkey Mouth =

Kris's sister Kari gave me the heads up to this great Monkey Mouth toy, which I got Max for Christmas. It's a perfect toy for Max right now. It's a gorilla head with a whole bunch of empty spaces for his teeth. There's a tub of like play-dough to be used in some teeth molds, as well as an assortment of plastic dental tools.
IMG_2952.JPG
Max's favorite tool is the battery powered drill. (It's the slowest moving drill you could ever imagine.)
Kris and Max sat down together to do some serious work on the monkey. Max is wearing Kris's thousand dollar loupes here. It made me a little nervous, but he felt seriously cool.
IMG_2962.JPG
Max kept saying. "It's ok Monkey, don't be scared."
IMG_2959.JPG
This is obviously a really fun toy for us because it's what Kris does all day, but I would imagine it would be a great toy for any kid who has been to the dentist before or will be going soon. I think it helped Max feel a little more comfortable with the whole dentist thing. Although I don't know how it could with the rate they were yanking out the poor monkey's teeth!

It was fun to see them working together. The drill didn't move fast enough for Kris though, he couldn't handle it. He just pulled teeth, Max did the drilling.

Here's Max fixing his other monkey's teeth.

* A Heads-Up *

I had several fun posts planned for this week, but because I've been really sick with some sort of flu-ish type thing Kris brought us I haven't been able to do much. Kris was really sick two weekends ago when his parents were here visiting, after they went home they got sick, really sick. I thought I was going to be able to get away without getting it, but unfortunately not. This bug has made me sicker than I've been in a really long time.
So anyway, now at least I'm feeling well enough to sit up and type. And I thought I'd give all your blogsters out there a heads-up.
If any of you like to read a good amount of blogs regularly and aren't using some kind of RSS reader, this post is for you! I recently starting using google reader, and it's the greatest thing. (thanks for telling me about it mom!) It keeps track of all your blogs and tells you when new entries are posted. It's really nice not to have to click around to a billion different blogs just to find out that most of them haven't been updated.
So maybe you all already knew about that, but for those that didn't, head over to google reader .  You'll like it, I promise!

> Mixed Feelings <

Today is the first day of the last semester for my master's degree (MBA). (I'm not a superstitious person, but I do hate to make statements like that. For those of you that care, I just knocked on wood a tiny bit.) I have mixed feelings today. I'm really really really looking forward to being done with school. Even more exciting is the fact that Kris and I will be finishing at the same time. It will be such a wonderful thing for our family to finally be done with school, dental school especially. It's been a long road for us and not too easy. So I'm glad to be starting with the last semester, finally. But I don't want to go!! I'm so tired of school. I've really enjoyed it, but I'm tired of it for sure. And not even really just tired of school, but just tired of having so much to do all the time. I always have way more stuff to do than I have time for. And I know that's just life, but it will be nice to have the school/work load lightened a bit so that I can actually get to some of the incredibly important family and household things that are always calling my name.
So wish us luck in our last semester. Hopefully my classes won't kill me. I have my capstone class which is supposed to be some huge group project (yick) and then another class I know nothing about. Kris is going to have to do about 7 crowns and various other stuff in order to be done in time for graduation. I know we can get to the end, we've made it this far, but I'm just a little worn out.
So there are my thoughts for the day. They're january kind of thoughts, a little grey, a little depressing. Good thing spring is coming, it's still a little ways away, but it's coming!

~ L ~

Welcome to Luh week at Max's cool school.
The kids got to eat some seriously cool stuff during luh week, such as, Lil Smokies (you know, those yummy little sausages?), lettuce and cucumber salad, linseltorte (some kind of German cake that Kris and I have never heard of), lentils with rice (I don't think I've ever actually eaten lentils, have you?), leftover fruit and l-ast but not l-east, leeks. After Max told me they had eaten leeks I realized that not only had I not ever eaten a leek that I was aware of, but I didn't even know what they looked like! Coincidentally, right about then a bloggy friend posted a yummy looking potato leek soup recipe. I went to the store, found some leeks and we had the soup for dinner that week. It was good! I had no idea that leeks had such a strong and interesting flavor.
See, so it's not only Max learning from his school, we're all participating.
Here's a luh-vely work of art created during luh week. It's a leopard in case you can't tell.
IMG_3086.JPG

Thanks for stopping in.....

and oh! I almost forgot! Here's the boy wearing the super-cool lei they made during luh week. It makes me want to go to Hawaii. But then again, it doesn't take much to make me wish for Hawaii.
